Poetry in Translation Salon

How do we connect across cultures through literature? Join Washington Writers’  Publishing House for a multi-lingual evening of Literary Cross Currents. We will read and discuss prose and poetry in translation and participate in a dual-lingual workshop with prompts inspired by our authors, then a reading from our featured writers that include Naomi Ayala, Dan Vera, Elizabeth Bruce, Diana Rojas, Caroline Bock, and Jona Colson. You do not need to speak Spanish or English to attend this salon. A reception and book signing will follow the reading.

More than Saints:
Diana Rojas in conversation with Ofelia Montelongo

The Writer’s Center welcomes Diana Rojas for a discussion of her debut collection of novellas, Litany of Saints: A Triptych. Diana will be in conversation with Ofelia Montelongo, author and Writer’s Center board member.

Ofelia Montelongo is a bilingual writer from Mexico.  Her work has been published in The Rumpus, Latino Book Review, Los Acentos Review, and she edits the Latine Monsters issue at Barrelhouse. Currently a teacher at the University of Maryland, she is a PEN/Faulkner writer in residence, a Macondista & a PEN America Emerging Voices Fellow.

Imperfect Paradise: A Litany of Saints

Diana Rojas discusses her collection of three novellas that center around the experiences of Costa Rican immigrants. Each novella displays characters who are grappling with their identities while struggling to balance the expectations and presumptions of others with their own desires.

Home and Away:  Writing About Place

How does the concept of “home” present in your writing? From setting stories in your hometown to exploring what it means to remake a home after immigration to creating new versions of home altogether, home can be its own sort of character. Mai Sennaar, author of They Dream In Gold, Diana Rojas, author of Litany of Saints, and Amanda Shaw, author of It Will Have Been So Beautiful, discuss how they navigate the idea of home to expand their stories and poems.

Inner Loop's Author Corner

The Inner Loop's Author's Corner program supports the recent works of local authors from independent publishers by spotlighting them across all our programming and through community collaborations. These nine authors will be highlighted at our reading events, interviewed on The Inner Loop Radio, featured in a guest post in the Washington Independent Review of Books, invited to panels at local bookstores, and more!

Narrative Presents:  Diana Rojas

Politics & Prose @ Union Market – in conversation with Tope Folarin

Rojas will be in conversation with Tope Folarin. Folarin is a Nigerian-American writer based in Washington DC. He serves as Director of the Institute for Policy Studies and the Lannan Visiting Lecturer in Creative Writing at Georgetown University. He is the recipient of the Caine Prize for African Writing, the Whiting Award for Fiction, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, among other awards. His reviews, essays and cultural criticism have been featured in The Atlantic, The Baffler, BBC, The Drift, High Country News, Lithub, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Nation, The New Republic, The New York Times Book Review, Vulture, The Washington Post and elsewhere.
